This is an ORIGINAL8 Lobby Card Set measuring 11” x 14” they all have edgewear, but they allfeature great color images and art for the 1961 SWORD & SANDALS type GLADIATOR motion picture,THE CENTURIONIl conquistatore di Corinto Director:Mario CostaScreenplay by Nino StresaA competent "Sword & Sandal" movie Jacques Sernas plays a Roman centurion sent to Corinth which, along with other Greek cities, is threatening to sever its ties with Rome. Diplomacy fails, revolt breaks out, and a Roman army must finally be brought in to restore order.Despite being on different sides, Sernas and Genevieve Grad -- the daughter of Corinth's ruler -- manage to fall in love, and the ups-and-downs of their "forbuyden" relationship provides much of the material for the movie's plot.Although just one of the "Sword and Sandal" movies which came out of Italy following the worldwide success in 1958 of Steve Reeves' "Hercules," this entry in the cycle is done in a competent, efficient manner which neatly balances the "big" story of the revolt with the "personal" story of the Roman-boy-meets-Greek-girl romance. Scenes of armies on the march or in battle become a bit wearing, however, especially when accompanied by repetitious music. The entire cast included: Jacques Sernas... Nice VINTAGE set of 8 Cards!!!MORE INFO ON JOHN DREW BARRYMORE: American actor with a sporadic career, the son of stage and screen legend John Barrymore. His father and mother, actress Dolores Costello divorced in his infancy and he claimed to remember seeing his father only once. His mother attempted to keep him from the acting life, sending him to St. John's Military Academy and intending that he attend college. But young Barrymore rebelled and signed a movie contract at 17. He chose not to apprentice in the theatre in small roles, leaping blindly into leading roles then bailing out of them at least twice before ever managing to make his stage debut. Although his family, especially his aunt Ethel Barrymore, was humiliated by the embarrassment these failures brought to the Barrymore name, he received encouragement from them as well. His rebellious nature began to cause him great personal and professional difficulty. He had repeated scrapes with the law and was jailed numerous times for drunkenness and spousal abuse. (He had married actress Cara Williams.) In 1958 he changed his name to John Drew Barrymore and had a brief resurgence in film, appearing in leading roles in several not completely uninteresting projects. But his social behavior continued to derail any professional progress and he had further incarcerations in the Sixties for drug activity. Although he continued to appear occasionally onscreen, he became more and more reclusive, eventually disappearing into the wilderness to live a mystical existence that has also been described as derelict. He was long estranged from his family, including his son John Blyth Barrymore (who has repeated many of his father's career and personal patterns) and daughter, actress Drew Barrymore.MORE INFO ON MITCHELL GORDON: Gordon Mitchell was one of those perfectly developed bodybuilders who jumped on the Steve Reeves bandwagon and hightailed it to Italy to seek movie stardom as a Herculean strongman. Born in Denver, Colorado, but raised in Inglewood, California, Mitchell served in WWII and at one point became a prisoner of war. After the war he went to college and became a high school teacher, albeit an imposing one, what with his incredible physique. He eventually became part of the "Muscle Beach" crowd and flexed his way into the entertainment field as part of Mae West's musclebound revues, where he toured everywhere from Las Vegas to the Latin Quarter with other "abs"normal actor wannabes such as Mickey Hargitay, Brad Harris and Reg Lewis. Mitchell took a fancy to show biz and appeared as posing beefcake in such films as The Ten Commandments (1956) and Li'l Abner (1959), which, of course, did little to advance his acting career. In 1961, after Reeves' Le fatiche di Ercole (1958) (US title: "Hercules") proved a phenomenal hit and revived the "muscleman" genre, the non-Italian-speaking Mitchell headed off to Europe and began appearing in the same type of badly dubbed sandal-and-spear epics. Adept at displaying both heroics and villainy, he developed his own core of fans, but when the fad wore off around 1965, Mitchell--unlike many of his colleagues in that field who just dropped out of sight--stayed on and appeared in over 100 more films, many of them in the "spaghetti western" genre, staying true to the country that made him a star.Winning buyder agrees in advance to pay an additional $6.95 for U.S.A.
